Grammy Winning Reggae Icon Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry’s, name has become synonymous with experimentation and innovation both as a legendary producer and influential performer. After over 40 years, “The Upsetter” shows no signs of slowing down any time soon.
One of the most important figures in the history of reggae music is Lee “Scratch” Perry. As an artist, songwriter, innovator, performer, creator and especially a producer, Perry has been at the forefront of reggae music since the late 50’s ska movement. Lee is undeniably the inventor of dub, reggae and the “scratch” turntable effect used by DJ’s everywhere. He was also a seminal influence on the works of Bob Marley and shaped the machinery that became his celebrated sound. Perry’s studio innovations made him such a sought after producer that he influenced not only reggae but also rock, punk, pop and dance music. Having collaborated with such icons as; The Clash on “Complete Control”, Junior Murvin on “Police and Thieves” and The Beastie Boys on “Dr. Lee PhD” for their 1998 hit Hello Nasty. At the height of his fame and celebrity so disillusioned with how the industry had progressed he burned his landmark “BlackArc” studio to the ground in protest. This the setting of all his master works was the ultimate slap in the face… only now in 2008 is he rebuilding a studio in his adopted homeland of Switzerland. The “BlackArc” will rise from the ashes…
By now you’ve heard the story that’s been covered by every major music media outlet from Billboard to Pitchfork. Starting with a chance meeting between Perry and hyper-energetic artist/producer Andrew W.K. at SXSW in 2006 that spawned an unthinkable friendship leading to a musical collaboration that would result in Lee Perry’s remarkable 54th studio album “Repentance.”
Recorded on the West coast at Music Inc. and providing the groundwork that Lee and Andrew would later build upon at Headgear Studio in Williamsburg. “Repentance” marks Perry’s welcome return to the ever-changing musical landscape following 2006’s “Panic in Babylon” released by Narnack Records.
“Repentance” fuses Perry’s signature style with a truly diverse collection of contemporary musical influences. From the sexually-charged club anthem “Pum Pum” to the infectious rhythm of “War Dance,” Lee’s mastery of all sounds makes it easy to see where artists like M.I.A., Spank Rock, and Hot Chip cut their teeth and found their sound.
